Cherry Blossoms and a Record Bar in Cheongju — 벚꽃 아래를 걷고, 청주 동부창고 LP바에 머문 날

Spring in Korea carries a particular kind of excitement.

For about two weeks every April, cherry blossoms appear and the whole country seems to pause beneath them.

People drive for hours to see the flowers. Paths that were quiet only a week earlier suddenly fill with visitors, and everyone walks with their heads tilted upward.

Cherry blossom season is brief.

Perhaps that is why people hurry toward it.

We know it will not wait.

Walking Beneath the Cherry Blossoms with Kkorangji

We went out for a walk with our cat, Kkorangji.

She is a small grey tabby who occasionally joins us outside on a lead.

There is something slightly absurd and wonderful about walking beneath cherry blossoms with a cat.

People were looking up at the trees.

Kkorangji was looking down at the ground.

She did not seem particularly impressed by the flowers above her. A discarded coffee cup near the path, however, held her complete attention.

Perhaps spring looks different depending on where your eyes are.

For us, it was the pale blossoms filling the branches.

For Kkorangji, it was every unfamiliar scent and object along the path.

We walked slowly beneath the trees.

Petals moved whenever the wind passed through, and the path was bright with the soft colours of early spring.

The blossoms were beautiful, but what I remember most is the small grey cat walking beneath them as though the season had been arranged entirely for her investigation.

An Afternoon at Dongbu Warehouse in Cheongju

After the walk, we drove to Cheongju.

Our destination was Dongbu Warehouse, an old warehouse district that has been transformed into a cultural space.

The buildings still carried the plain, solid shape of their former purpose.

But inside, the old warehouses had been given new lives.

One of the buildings held an LP bar.

Wooden tables.

Low lighting.

A wall filled with records.

And someone behind the counter whose affection for music could be felt before they said very much.

There are places where you immediately sense that the person running them genuinely loves what they do.

The room did not feel designed merely to look nostalgic.

The records were not decoration.

The music was the reason the place existed.

We sat down and stayed longer than we had planned.

We often do that in places like this.

A good space loosens your sense of time.

You stop checking how long you have been there and begin listening to the next song instead.

Records were selected, music filled the room, and the low light made the afternoon feel farther away than it really was.

Outside, spring was bright and crowded.

Inside, time moved at the speed of a record turning.

Two Weeks, and Then It Is Over

On the drive home, the road was lined with fallen petals.

Some still rested on the branches.

Others had already gathered along the edge of the road.

Cherry blossoms arrive all at once and disappear almost as quickly.

Two weeks, and then it is over.

Perhaps that briefness is part of what makes the season feel so intense.

We go outside because we know there will not be another chance next week.

We look up because the flowers are already beginning to leave.

But for those two weeks, it is enough to make you believe that the world occasionally knows exactly what it is doing.

A grey cat beneath the blossoms.

Music turning slowly inside an old warehouse.

Petals scattered along the road home.

Spring does not stay for long.

Still, it leaves behind enough for us to remember where we were while it passed.
