A Branch Lamp and a Bowl of Spring –

Spring seemed to arrive all at once.

Only a short while ago, the garden was still carrying the pale and quiet colours of winter. Then the temperature rose, the sunlight became softer, and the air outside began to feel different.

That morning, Kong was already awake.

He sat near the window, watching the day begin as though he had been waiting for spring before the rest of us.

The countryside becomes noticeably busier when the season changes.

Birds begin calling earlier.

The garden starts showing small signs of green.

And even before there is much to see, the air itself seems to carry the promise of something new.

It was the kind of morning that made me want to open the windows and begin the day slowly.

Coffee for a Spring Morning

I started with coffee.

The beans had been sent from Steady Jeju, and I prepared them at our home café.

Grinding coffee in the morning has become one of the small rhythms of this house.

The sound of the grinder fills the quiet room for a moment, and then the scent of coffee begins to spread.

It is not a complicated ritual.

Beans, water, a cup, and a little time.

But some mornings feel properly started only after warm water has passed through freshly ground coffee.

Outside, spring was beginning.

Inside, coffee was dripping slowly into the cup.

For a while, that was enough.

Making a Lamp from a Tree Branch

I had brought home a tree branch I found outside.

It was not perfectly straight or carefully shaped. It curved in its own direction and still carried the rough surface of something that had spent a long time outdoors.

That was exactly what I liked about it.

Instead of buying a finished lamp, I wanted to make one using the branch.

Something that would still look like part of a tree, even after it had become part of the room.

I cleaned the branch and prepared the pieces needed to turn it into a light.

The process took time.

I adjusted the position, checked the balance, connected the light, and looked at it again from a distance.

Handmade work often involves repeating small decisions.

A little higher.

A little lower.

Turn it slightly.

Try again.

The branch did not behave like a perfectly manufactured material.

It had knots, curves, and its own weight.

Rather than forcing it into a neat shape, I tried to follow the form it already had.

That is one of the pleasures of working with natural materials.

The result cannot be completely controlled.

The maker begins with an idea, but the material also has something to say.

Little by little, the branch began to look less like something found outside and more like something that belonged in the house.

Still, it did not lose its original shape.

It had simply found another place to stand.

Bomdong Bibimbap for Lunch

After working on the lamp, I became hungry.

For lunch, I made bibimbap using bomdong, a spring cabbage that appears near the end of winter and the beginning of spring in Korea.

Bomdong leaves are tender but still have a pleasant crispness.

Their fresh taste feels especially welcome after a season of warm, heavy food.

I prepared the cabbage and mixed it with rice and seasoning.

The green leaves made the bowl look like spring had arrived at the table before it had fully reached the garden.

Seasonal food has a way of making time visible.

Bomdong does not stay for every season.

It appears for a while, tastes best when the weather is beginning to change, and then quietly makes room for the next ingredient.

Perhaps that is why food made with seasonal ingredients feels more memorable.

It belongs not only to a meal, but also to a particular moment of the year.

The bibimbap was simple, fresh, and enough to wake up an appetite that had been quiet during winter.

A bowl of rice, spring cabbage, and a little seasoning.

Sometimes spring arrives first as a taste.

When the Branch Became a Light

By late evening, the lamp was finally complete.

I turned off the other lights in the room and switched it on.

The branch that had once been lying outside now held a warm light beside the bed.

During the day, it looked like an object I had made.

At night, it became part of the atmosphere of the room.

The light was soft enough to rest under.

It did not brighten every corner.

Instead, it left some parts of the room in shadow and gently illuminated only what was nearby.

That was the kind of light I had wanted.

A lamp does not always need to make a room brighter.

Sometimes it only needs to make the darkness feel more comfortable.

The branch still looked like a branch.

Its curves and rough texture became more visible beneath the warm glow.

It was imperfect, but there was only one like it.

Something picked up outside had become a small light for our nights at home.

Strawberries at the End of Winter

The day ended with strawberries and chocolate fondue.

The strawberries were from the last part of winter, just before the season began to turn completely toward spring.

We dipped them into melted chocolate and ate them slowly beneath the new light.

Outside, the night was still cold.

Inside, the branch lamp cast a warm glow over the room.

Spring had arrived during the day, but winter had not entirely left.

Perhaps seasons do not change by replacing one another all at once.

For a while, they overlap.

Warm sunlight and cold nights.

Spring cabbage and winter strawberries.

New green outside and a handmade light indoors.

That day held a little of both seasons.

The excitement of something beginning,

and the sweetness of something almost ending.
