A Valentine’s Day in Seojong and Gondre Pot Rice-

Valentine’s Day began quietly in our countryside home.

There were no large plans and no elaborate celebration.

The morning simply arrived with winter light, a warm room, and the small routines that usually begin our day.

Outside, the air was still cold.

Inside, the house held the kind of warmth that makes winter mornings feel slower.

Before making coffee, I went outside to feed Ing-ing, one of the stray cats who visits us.

She was already waiting.

For her, Valentine’s Day was probably no different from any other day.

There was a bowl of food, a familiar voice, and a quiet place to eat.

Sometimes affection looks less like a special event and more like remembering who might be waiting for you in the morning.

Espresso with a Chocolate Spoon

Back inside, I prepared espresso at our home café.

That morning, I used a chocolate spoon.

It looked like an ordinary spoon at first, but as it touched the hot espresso, the chocolate slowly began to melt.

The bitter coffee and sweet chocolate blended little by little.

It was a small and playful way to begin Valentine’s Day.

Not dramatic.

Just enough to make an ordinary cup feel different.

There are days when a familiar ritual becomes memorable because of one small change.

The same espresso.

The same cup.

But a spoon made of chocolate was enough to turn the moment into a little gift.

A Winter Outing to Seojong

Later, we drove to Seojong.

Winter drives have their own quiet mood.

The trees are bare, the colours are subdued, and the road feels more open than it does in spring or summer.

We stopped for sundae-guk for lunch.

A bowl of hot soup felt especially welcome in the cold weather.

Steam rose from the table, and the warmth of the broth slowly reached my hands and face.

Winter food does not always need to be beautiful.

Sometimes it only needs to be hot, generous, and comforting.

After lunch, we continued to Munhori River Market.

Small Things at Munhori River Market

At the market, we visited Maeil Sanghoe.

There were small household items, handmade goods, and objects that made me want to stop and look more closely.

Markets like this are enjoyable not only because of what they sell.

They also carry the taste and attention of the people who choose each object.

A cup, a small decoration, a useful tool, or something made simply to bring a little pleasure into a room.

None of them are essential.

Still, some objects have a way of making everyday life feel more personal.

We walked slowly, looking at the small things gathered there.

A market visit often becomes less about buying and more about imagining.

Where would this sit at home?

How might this be used?

What kind of day would this object become part of?

Coffee at Terarosa Seojong

After the market, we stopped at Terarosa Seojong.

The building, the winter light, and the smell of coffee made a calm pause in the middle of the outing.

We ordered drinks and sat for a while.

Outside, the day remained cold.

Inside, people spoke quietly over warm cups.

A café becomes especially comforting in winter because of the contrast.

Cold air beyond the glass.

Warm coffee in both hands.

A reason to sit still before going outside again.

The trip was not long, but it was enough to change the rhythm of the day.

Sometimes leaving home for a few hours makes returning feel warmer.

Roasting Black Buckwheat Tea

Back at home, I roasted black buckwheat tea.

As the grains heated, a nutty scent slowly filled the room.

Roasting requires attention.

The colour changes gradually, and the aroma becomes deeper as the heat reaches each grain.

Too little, and the flavour remains faint.

Too much, and the bitterness begins to take over.

So I stayed nearby, stirring and watching.

There is a quiet satisfaction in preparing something from its beginning.

Not simply opening a package and pouring it into a cup, but listening to the grains move in the pan and waiting for the scent to tell you when they are ready.

The roasted buckwheat would later become a warm, earthy tea.

A taste well suited to winter evenings.

Gondre Pot Rice with Atka Mackerel

For dinner, I made gondre pot rice with Atka mackerel.

Gondre, a Korean thistle, has a soft texture and deep, earthy flavour.

When cooked with rice, its scent spreads through the pot and gives the meal a gentle, rustic character.

I placed the gondre over the rice and added the mackerel on top.

As the rice cooked, the savoury flavour of the fish settled into the grains.

The lid stayed closed while steam gathered inside.

Pot rice asks for patience.

You prepare the ingredients, lower the heat, and then wait.

You cannot keep opening the lid to check.

You have to trust the pot to do its work.

When it was finally ready, I lifted the lid.

Warm steam rose all at once.

The green gondre, tender rice, and golden mackerel had become one complete meal.

The fish was firm and chewy, and the rice carried both the fragrance of the greens and the richness of the mackerel.

It was nourishing without feeling heavy.

A warm meal made from ingredients brought home from the market.

Perhaps that is one of the pleasures of a local outing.

The day does not end when you return home.

It continues at the table.

A Quiet Ending by the Fireplace

After dinner, we sat near the fireplace.

The day had begun with winter light and ended with firelight.

Outside, the night was cold and still.

Inside, the flames moved slowly behind the glass.

The market, the coffee, the roasted buckwheat, and the pot rice had all become part of the same day.

There had been no grand Valentine’s Day event.

Only a chocolate spoon melting into espresso.

A meal in Seojong.

Small objects at the river market.

Warm coffee.

A pot of gondre rice.

And a quiet night by the fire.

But perhaps a day does not need to be extraordinary to feel like a gift.

Sometimes a gift is simply a day that has been noticed.
