A Snowy Winter Day with Pan-Roasted Coffee and Cat Paw Prints-

Snow had fallen throughout the night.

By morning, the yard, the roof, and the road beyond the house were covered in white. The familiar countryside landscape looked quieter than usual, as though the night had carefully erased all unnecessary lines.

Before beginning anything else, I stepped outside to greet the birds.

On snowy mornings, I think about them a little more.

The ground they usually search had disappeared beneath the snow, and the cold seemed to make every small movement more difficult.

The morning air was sharp, but the world was unusually still.

A few footprints crossed the untouched snow.

The trees held thin layers of white along their branches, and the house stood quietly behind me.

Winter mornings in the countryside can feel empty at first.

But when I listen closely, they are not empty at all.

There are wings moving between branches, snow slipping from the roof, and small lives already beginning their day.

Roasting Coffee in a Frying Pan

Our coffee roaster had stopped working.

Still, there were green coffee beans waiting to be roasted.

So that morning, I used a frying pan instead.

Pan roasting is much simpler in appearance than using a dedicated coffee roaster, but it asks for constant attention.

The beans need to keep moving.

The heat reaches them unevenly if they are left still for too long, so I stayed beside the stove and stirred them continuously.

At first, the green beans changed only slightly.

Then their colour deepened little by little, and the familiar scent of roasting coffee began to fill the kitchen.

The beans were not perfectly even.

Some became darker before the others, and the process felt less predictable than using a machine.

But perhaps that was what made it interesting.

When a familiar tool breaks, the task does not always have to stop.

Sometimes we simply return to a more basic way of doing it.

A pan, heat, green beans, and patience.

The result was a little imperfect, but the scent was deep and warm.

Freshly roasted coffee has an aroma that seems to settle into the entire house.

It reaches the room before the cup does.

After the beans had cooled, I made coffee and sat down for a moment.

Outside, the snow reflected the morning light.

Inside, the scent of coffee remained in the warm kitchen.

A broken roaster had changed the method, but not the pleasure of the morning.

Cat Paw Prints in the Snow

Later, I brought out a small pair of shoes made with a 3D printer.

The soles were shaped like cat paws.

They were made for one simple purpose:

to leave cat paw prints in the snow.

I put them on and stepped outside.

Each step pressed a small paw shape into the white surface.

One print.

Then another.

Soon, a trail of imaginary cat footprints crossed the yard.

It was a completely unnecessary thing to make.

And that was precisely why it was fun.

Not everything we create needs to solve a problem.

Some things can exist simply to make us smile.

The snow, which had looked calm and untouched that morning, was now covered with playful little paw prints.

For a moment, it looked as though an unusually large cat had wandered through the yard during the night.

Living in the countryside gives us enough space for this kind of useless and joyful experiment.

A 3D printer inside the house.

Fresh snow outside.

And an idea that only needed both of them to meet.

A Walk to a Neighbourhood Gallery

I had gone outside intending to clear the snow.

But before finishing, I left for a walk to a nearby gallery.

Sometimes a small outing begins this way.

Not because it was carefully planned, but because the day quietly changes direction.

The road was still surrounded by winter white.

The snow softened familiar places and made the neighbourhood feel briefly unfamiliar.

A local gallery is different from a large museum.

It feels closer to the life around it.

The art does not seem separated from the village or the weather outside. It becomes another part of the day, alongside the road, the trees, and the houses nearby.

Stepping into a gallery after walking through the cold created a small pause.

Outside was snow and muted winter light.

Inside were objects and images made by someone’s hands and thoughts.

A quiet space can change the way we look.

After standing in front of an artwork for a while, even the road home can appear a little different.

A No-Bake Cheesecake with Yogurt and Crackers

Back at home, I made a simple no-bake cheesecake using yogurt and crackers.

There was no oven and no complicated preparation.

The crisp crackers and soft yogurt came together to make a small dessert that felt more curious than elaborate.

I like recipes that begin with ordinary ingredients and turn them into something slightly unexpected.

A familiar cracker changes after resting with yogurt.

The texture softens, the flavours come together, and what began as a few simple ingredients becomes something resembling cheesecake.

It is not exactly the same as a cake baked in an oven.

It does not need to be.

There is pleasure in making something with what is already available.

Especially on a snowy day, when going out to buy a long list of ingredients feels less appealing than opening the cupboard and seeing what can be made.

The dessert was simple, cool, and gently sweet.

A small reward after the cold air outside.

Making a Mini Knitted Lamp

The final project of the day was a miniature knitted lamp.

I used bamboo skewers from Daiso to create the small structure.

Thin wooden sticks, yarn, and a light slowly became a tiny lamp.

Miniature projects ask for a different kind of concentration.

The pieces are small, so every movement feels more visible.

A slightly uneven line or a loose part can change the entire shape.

I worked slowly, wrapping and adjusting the material until the light began to take form.

The yarn softened the straight bamboo frame.

When the lamp was switched on, the small knitted surface held the light gently.

It was not made to brighten an entire room.

It was simply a little glow.

But a small light can still change the atmosphere around it.

During the day, the snow had made the world outside brighter.

At night, the miniature lamp created its own warm brightness inside.

Small Joys on a Winter Day

The day began with snow and birds.

Coffee beans were roasted in a frying pan because the usual machine had broken.

Cat paw prints crossed the yard, even though no cat had made them.

A short walk led to a neighbourhood gallery.

Yogurt and crackers became a small cheesecake.

And bamboo skewers and yarn became a miniature light.

None of these things were particularly important.

Still, together they filled the winter day.

Happiness is not always something we discover after completing a large plan.

Sometimes it is gathered from small experiments.

From finding another way when a tool no longer works.

From making something that has no purpose except delight.

From stepping away from snow clearing to look at art.

From turning ordinary materials into dessert or light.

The snow would eventually melt.

The footprints would disappear.

The coffee would be drunk, and the small lamp would become part of the room.

But for one winter day, these little things were enough to make the house feel full.
