There is a magnolia tree at the edge of our yard.
Every spring, it blooms for about ten days.
Ten days.
That is all we get.

The rest of the year, it stands quietly among the other trees. Then, for a brief time in spring, the branches fill with white flowers and the whole edge of the yard seems brighter.
Magnolia season is short enough to miss.
A few busy mornings, a little rain, and suddenly the petals are already beginning to fall.

I have learned to pay closer attention now.
I watch the buds begin to swell.
I look for the first flower to open.
And when the morning light passes through the white petals, I try to be outside long enough to notice it.
For a little while, the ordinary yard feels almost ceremonial.
This year, I did not miss it.

A Fence Made from Fallen Branches
While the magnolia was blooming, I began making a small fence along the garden border.
It was nothing formal or architectural.
I gathered branches from around the yard and tied them together loosely with twine.

Some were straight.
Others curved in their own direction.
Their thickness and colour were all slightly different.
I did not try to make them perfectly even.
I wanted the fence to look as though it had always belonged there.
There is a particular satisfaction in making something from what is already on the land.
There was no need to go to the hardware store.
No new plastic material.
Only branches that had fallen in the yard, gathered and given another purpose.
Once, they had been part of a tree.
Then they lay on the ground after wind and weather had brought them down.
Now they stood together at the edge of the garden, holding a boundary gently.
The fence did not block the view.
It simply marked where one space ended and another began.
I liked that it did not feel hard or permanent.
It was a boundary, but a soft one.
Before the Petals Fell
The work took longer than I expected.
I adjusted the branches, loosened the twine, and tied several places again.
While I worked, the magnolia remained above me.
The flowers opened quietly, one after another.
There was no sound to announce them.
No moment when spring clearly said that it had arrived.
There were only white petals against the sky and branches slowly filling with light.
By the time the fence was finished, the magnolia had begun to drop its first petals.
A few lay on the ground beneath the tree.
The season had already started to move on.
That is the thing about spring in the countryside.
It does not wait until we are ready.
Flowers bloom while we are busy.
Leaves unfold while we are looking somewhere else.
And by the time we decide to pay attention, part of the season may already have passed.
Still, we do not have to catch everything.
A few mornings beneath the magnolia.
A handful of branches tied together.
The first white petals resting on the ground.
Sometimes that is enough to remember the whole season.
Spring does not stay for long.
But when we are paying attention, it leaves enough behind.
