I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time.
We live in a small village in Gapyeong — Wigong-ri, a cluster of houses tucked into a valley, surrounded by mountains on three sides. From the ground, you can only ever see part of it. From above, it becomes something else entirely.
So I flew the drone.
The footage was everything I hoped it would be — the houses arranged along the road, the fields beginning to green, the mountains holding everything in. Our house visible from above for the first time. Small. Surrounded. Exactly right.
From that footage, I made a 3D frame — printing the aerial image and building it into a layered box frame, so the mountains sit at the back, the fields in the middle, the village at the front. The kind of object that rewards looking at slowly.
It lives on the wall now. Some mornings I stand in front of it for a moment before the day starts. There’s something grounding about seeing the place you live from above — it puts the scale of things right.
We also revived a broken pot that day. Cracked clean through, it had been sitting in the garden for months. A little cement, some patience — it’s back. Not invisible, but mended. Which is, I think, the better outcome anyway.

오래전부터 하고 싶었던 거예요.
우리는 가평의 작은 마을에 살아요 — 위공리, 세 방향이 산으로 둘러싸인 골짜기에 모여 있는 집들. 땅에서는 일부만 볼 수 있어요. 위에서 보면 전혀 다른 것이 돼요.
그래서 드론을 날렸어요.
영상은 기대했던 그대로였어요 — 도로를 따라 늘어선 집들, 초록빛이 되어가는 들판, 모든 것을 안고 있는 산들. 우리 집이 위에서 처음으로 보였어요. 작고, 둘러싸여 있고, 딱 맞는 느낌이었어요.
그 영상으로 3D 액자를 만들었어요 — 항공 이미지를 인쇄해서 레이어드 박스 프레임으로 만들었어요. 산이 뒤에, 들판이 중간에, 마을이 앞에. 천천히 봐야 보상받는 오브제예요.
지금 벽에 걸려있어요. 어떤 아침에는 하루가 시작되기 전에 잠깐 그 앞에 서있어요. 자기가 사는 곳을 위에서 바라보는 데는 뭔가 안정감을 주는 것이 있어요. 사물의 규모를 바로잡아줘요.
그날 깨진 화분도 살렸어요. 완전히 금이 가서 몇 달째 마당에 있었어요. 약간의 시멘트와 인내심으로 돌아왔어요. 티가 나지만 수선된 것. 어쨌든 더 나은 결과라고 생각해요.
